When Chinese attacked on 4th February in the year 1960 on India, a huge section of Almora district parted and took shape of Pithoragarh district. The headquarters of Pithoragarh remained at Pithoragarh town. After a long time of Chinese aggression on 15th September in 1997 the Champawat Tehsil also became a part of Pithoragarh and turned into a district. There were many debates regarding the name of the region. Some say that the name of the city was taken from the King Pithora Chand from the Chand Dynasty.
Besides that a part of Folklore by the Chauhan Rajuput says, that the name of the town was received from Prithvi Raj Chauhan. Pals were ruled over the region for three generation and they brought extension in Pithoragarh to Askot. British also brought the region under their control after 1815. The Christianity religion improved a lot during the Raj of British in the district.
Pithoragarh is one of the hilly towns of the Uttarakhand State. This small city is situated in the middle of the beautiful Soar Valley. The Soar Valley also referred as the Mini Kashmir. From the northern side Pithoragarh town is also very popular as the Gateway to the Himalayas. Because visitors trek through this town to the Mount Kailash, Om Parvat and Lake Mansarovar. The small region is circled by four hills as Dhwaj, Chandak, Kundar and Thal Kedar. The place is the perfect area for adventure lovers as sports and especially for Skiing.
Pithoragarh is perched at an elevation of about 1645 meters above the sea level. The town is speared over an area of 7, 217 sq kilometers. A plenty of rivers flow thorugh the region such as Girthi, Keogad, River Garbyang, Kali River, Sarju River and River Dhauli. The northern area of Pithoragarh is filled with dense forests, located at an elevation of 14, 000 ft above the sea level. For the perfect administration Pithoragarh district is parted into six Tehsils by Dharchula, Munsiyari, Gangolihat, Berinag, Didihat and Pithoragarh.
The breath-taking magnificent beauty of the mighty Himalayas attracts here a large number of tourists around the year. The picturesque area offers you a variety of flora and fauna to see. Apart from that there are many sightseeing and tourist attractions situated in the region.
The months of summers are pleasant here, when the temperature varies from 7 to 20 degrees Celsius. December to March is the period of winter, when temperature plummets to 4 degree Celsius. The days during monsoon are good in the sunlight and chilly in the night. Monsoon brings light rainfall here.
