Mukteshwar

The name Mukteshwar is a derivation of two Sanskrit words - one is "mukhti" that means eternal life and the other "ishwar" which stands for God (pointing to Lord Shiva). Mukteshwar is also spiritually or religiously known as Mukteshwar Dham. It is a tranquil and peaceful city and one of the busiest pilgrimage destinations in Nainital district of Uttarakhand State. This spiritual site is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Both, pilgrims and tourists visit this holy place in good numbers.

Mukteshwar town is picturesquely located in the lap of Uttarakhand Kumaon hills. The entire region is circled with the dense fruit orchards and forests. This beautiful places was discovered during the British era.

Being an impressive hill station, the place offers a majestic picture of the mighty Himalayas. Located closely is a Chauli Ki Jali, offered to Lord Shiva. In the sparkling moonlight, one can easily soak up in the view of Almora town and impressive peaks of Adi Nampa. Throughout the year this heavenly destination attracts the multitudes of sightseers and nature lovers.

Mukhteshwar has an ancient, hundred years old Indian Veterinary Research Institute, which was developed in 1893.

The area remains has a pleasant atmosphere round the year. In the month of summers (i.e. March to May) the optimum level of temperature 27 degree and in winter's temperature varies from 17 degree Celsius to 3 degree Celsius. Winter season also brings heavy snowfall in the region, which is the feast for the eyes. During monsoon in July, August and September, one can see a majestic view of the abundant natural beauty in the region.

Mukteshwar temple is very popular among the tourists and as a famous tourist destination as well. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. Apart from visiting the temple, people can also visit Chauli-ki-jali located nearby. It is believed that a holy touch of the "Jali" can bless women who have no children. Other attractions include Brahmeshwara temple, the Raja Rani temple, Nathuakhan and Ramgarh among others.
